Birth of Baby Dean
March 24th- Sunday night at 8 pm we headed into Madison Memorial Hospital to start the induction. I was still only dilated a fingertip. They put a small cervidil in me to soften my cervix. It was not comfortable and I was given half an ambien to help with the pain and sleep, but I was not able to sleep at all that night. I tossed and turned all night long and had to get up and go to the bathroom every hour.
March 25th- Around 6 am, Monday March 25th, they got me a piece of toast and that was all I could eat until after the baby was born. They took out the cervidil and started me on Pitocin and broke my water. I was exhausted. I was still in pain, but not as bad after getting that cervidil out.
Around 10:00 am, they came in a checked me and I was dilated 1 cm. They told me that he probably would not be born until Tuesday, March 26th. My heart dropped. I did not want to wait that long to have this little boy. They asked me if I wanted the epidural and I said not yet. I took the pain until a few hours later when the anesthesiologist was making her rounds again. I got the epidural around 12:00. They checked me again at 2 pm and it was so nice not to have felt them checking me this time! I was dilated to 3 cm this time. Slowly making progress....His head was not dropping. He was being stubborn!
I was in and out of sleep by now, trying to build up the energy to be able to push. The nurse came back in 5 pm and asked Mikal what he thought I was dilated too. He said I hope she is a 10! The nurse looked at him and said, "Well, guess what!? She is a 10!" She told me to get some rest and she would come back in an hour and we would start pushing. Mikal started making the calls to let his family and my family know that we will be having this baby tonight.
An hour later, the nurse came back in and asked Mikal to grab one of my legs and she would grab the other to start pushing the baby out. I pushed for 2 hours before the doctor came and said that he was going to help me push the baby out because he was getting a little bit of stress from being in the birth canal. They had me on oxygen in between contractions to help get him moving. The doctor said that the baby was coming out at the perfect angle, he just needed a little bit of help. He put the little vacuum to his head and pulled and within 3 contractions I had his head partially out and had to wait until the 4th contraction to push the head fully out! I got his head out and with one more big push I was able to push the shoulders out. He had his arm up while coming out so he got a little bruise on his elbow. He also came out gripping the umbilical cord with both his hands! I looked up at Mikal and he was crying. He was so happy. He got to cut the cord and was surprised at how hard it was to cut.
They laid him on my chest right after he was born and Mikal and I got to rub him down and get the blood circulating through him. He was crying, but I was overjoyed! He has a set of lungs on him that is for sure! Our little miracle had arrived and it was such an surreal feeling!
The nurse asked if she could take him to get his vitals and measurements. Mikal followed her over to the little baby station. The doctor pushed on my stomach to birth the placenta. The doctor said my birth was so great and my placenta looked beautiful. He stitched me up since I tore part way and said I did really well. The doctor then left. Nora & Val were out waiting and Mikal went out and grabbed them so they could come see Dean. They came in and said hi, and left within minutes.
They brought Dean back to me and put him on my chest again. I was so thirsty and asked Mikal for a drink of water. I chugged down probably half of the water container they give you at the hospital and then I looked up at Mikal and said, "I'm gunna throw up..." and that is exactly what I did. I threw up 3 times all over Dean. The nurses were cleaning everything up and one of the nurses pushed on my stomach again and she got really big eyes and said she would be right back. She ran and got the doctor and he came back and pushed on my stomach again and realized that the blood flow was not stopping. I was hemorrhaging.
I lost a liter of blood within minutes. Mikal was over getting Dean cleaned off with the nurse and he looked back at me and noticed that I was completely white. He said he never has seen a person so white before (unless they were dead). He had no clue what was going on. The baby nurse asked Mikal if it was okay if they fed Dean 12 ml of formula since I was not going to be able to. The baby nurse had to jump in and help the doctor with my bleeding. I kept telling the doctor that I was really tired. They informed Mikal that they were going to have to put a balloon catheter in me to help my uterus stop bleeding. He was in shock. I told Mikal to call my mom and he ended up freaking her out. My mom asked if he was the only one there and he said yes. He called his mom to have her come back to the hospital and help with everything that night. I was so tired and out of it. I just wanted to hold Dean, but I was not coherent.
The doctor got the balloon catheter in me and started filled it with saline solution. They kept the epidural in me, just in case they needed to prep me for surgery if the bleeding did not stop. They told me that if I did not stop bleeding they may have to do a hysterectomy on me.
After a couple attempts, they got the balloon placed correctly and stitched me up again for the 2nd time. I had lost so much blood that I needed 3 blood transfusions. The doctor was impressed that I never passed out. I kept asking/telling him that I was so tired and might pass out. They gave me some Benadryl and that made me so loopy. Mikal and his mom were laughing at me because when the nurses were moving me around and putting new clothes on me, I said that I was "farm girl strong!" I could do this! They gave me the 3 transfusions that night and I did not realize that it takes 2 hours per small bag of blood to get put into your system. They ended up having to feed Dean a few bottles that night because I could not really get him to nurse from me and I was still so weak. I wanted to hold him and Mikal brought him to me a couple times so I could lay by him.
March 26th- The next morning after, I was in need of antibiotics to help with the healing process. The nurse poked me 2 times and said she was going to get someone else to do it since my veins were still really little from all the blood loss. I told the nurse, "what more could go wrong?" (since she had to poke me more than once) She looked at me and said, "DON'T SAY THAT!" The other nurse poked me and got the IV in. They started the antibiotics and Nora brought Dean over to me so I could see how big his hands and feet were. We were looking at Dean and I said that my arm hurt pretty bad where she stuck the IV. I lifted up my arm and noticed a baseball size lump in my arm. The nurse had missed my vein and was pumping all the fluid into my arm. Nora ran and got a nurse to stop the IV. The nurse who poked me 2 times came back in and scolded me for saying something earlier... I just laughed it off.
After they got the last of the transfusions and the antibiotics in me, they decided it was time to move me out of the labor and delivery unit and into the maternity unit. We packed up all my stuff and I could barely move, I did not like have so much stuck to me and I could barely stand. Mikal basically lifted me off the bed and into the wheel chair.
We stayed in the hospital all that day and had some visitors come. Danica Brunner came and took some pictures of Mikal and Dean. They are so cute! Mikal's 4 sisters, Suzanne, Isabel, Gabriella & Arabella. My co-workers, Janeth Rodriguez, Tati Rodriguez & Angel Gonzalez. My cousin Kendall Bolingbroke. My office sent me some flowers as well! Mikal was so helpful with all the nurses that he ended up getting 2 "free" meals from the hospital when they would make their food rounds.
We were exhausted and every time that Dean wanted to eat, Mikal would have to bring him to me because I was not allowed to get up and move around or pick him up because of all that happened. They slowly started taking some of the saline out of the balloon in my uterus to see if the bleeding stopped.
Dean went and got his first bath and hearing test done. Mikal said he hated the bath and he did not pass the hearing test in his left ear. We would then need to go see an audiologist a week or two later to have him tested again because it was probably just fluid in his ear.
March 27th- Around 2 am in the morning the nurse came and took out the balloon and catheter in me. It felt so nice to be able to have my body back to itself again! She told me that within a few hours I would need to get up and go to the bathroom and if I had any blood clots that were as big as an avocado that I would need to inform them right way because that meant that my bleeding still hadn't stopped. Around 4 am, I was trying to feed Dean I tried to get Dean to calm down and Mikal and I were so exhausted that we ended up calling a nurse to take care of him. I cried when Dean left the room. I felt like a horrible mother for not being able to get my baby to calm down. She did the final discharge paperwork and got him all ready to leave the hospital. She brought him back about an hour later. We talked with the doctor that morning and we were finally able to be discharged from the hospital that afternoon! We were so excited to go home! My parents and brother Carter showed up that night around midnight and got to spend the next week with us!
Thanks to Danica Brunner for the pictures in the hospital! We love them.
Throughout all this experience, I told myself that it was all worth it to have a healthy baby boy! I would do it again! Some days and moments are harder than others, but in the end, it is all worth it! We love our little man and are so happy and excited to call him ours for eternity!
